One hundred years ago "the blackest gnome" sprang from the imagination of Florence and Bertha Upton capturing the hearts of every child in Great Britain. He was the Golliwogg.

Right up to the present day he has enthralled and entertained children through the medium of books, dolls, badges, children's china and toys. Artists have used him in illustrations, writers have written fascinating stories about him and even a preserves company use him for their company emblem.
